Retirees Choosing City – National Seniors Australia

Many retirees and empty-nesters are shunning the traditional sea-change and tree change-change options in favour of inner-city resort style living, with luxury apartment complexes attracting an increasing number of over 50s buyers.

While historically this group has headed for the hills or seaside to see out their twilight years, the cosmopolitan lifestyle is becoming more appealing to a generation living longer and retiring younger.

Social analyst David Chalke said baby boomers were embracing the greater choice available to them compared to preceding generations.

“Today’s retirees are fitter, more active and can expect to another 15 to 20 years of active life, so they want to make the most of it,” he said.

“They are digitally empowered, they have a more global outlook, are more open to change and they are wealthier, so they can afford to enjoy the finer things.”

Birkdale couple James & Sandra Crawford are already planning ahead, recently purchasing a twp bedroom apartment at the new Waters Edge development at West End, Brisbane, as part of their 10 year retirement plan.

“We brought the apartment at Waters Edge as an investment property for the short-term, with the view to settle in and enjoy it ourselves when we retire,” Mr Crawford said.

“With an empty nest and the luxury of spare time, we are looking forward to embracing life when we retire and enjoying all the beautiful city of Brisbane has to offer.

“We are very active people so the bikeways and walking paths around West End and the city are huge draw cards, not to mention the proximity to QPAC,GoMA, South Bank and the City.”
